South Korea’s Aekyung Decides to Recall 2080 Toothpaste Products

Aekyung Industry, a major South Korean consumer goods company, has announced a voluntary recall of several toothpaste products under its well-known “2080” brand. The decision follows the discovery of a trace amount of a preservative ingredient that is not permitted in oral care products under South Korean regulations.

While no health incidents have been reported, the recall has drawn public attention due to the everyday nature of the product and the high level of trust consumers place in established household brands.

Background of the Recall

The recall was announced on January 6, 2026, after Aekyung Industry conducted internal quality inspections. During these checks, the company identified trace levels of triclosan, an antibacterial preservative that has been banned from toothpaste and other oral care products in South Korea.

Although the detected amount was described as minimal, Aekyung Industry chose to act immediately, suspending imports and distribution of the affected items and notifying the country’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

The toothpaste products were manufactured by Domy, a China-based supplier, and imported into South Korea by Aekyung Industry.

Products Affected

The recall includes six toothpaste products sold under the 2080 brand:

  • 2080 Basic Toothpaste
  • 2080 Daily Care Toothpaste
  • 2080 Smart Care Plus Toothpaste
  • 2080 Classic Care Toothpaste
  • 2080 Triple Effect Alpha Fresh Toothpaste
  • 2080 Triple Effect Alpha Strong Toothpaste

The 2080 brand is widely recognized in South Korea, which has contributed to heightened consumer concern despite the absence of reported injuries or illnesses.

Why Triclosan Is Regulated

Triclosan was once widely used in personal care products for its antibacterial properties. Over time, however, concerns related to long-term exposure and environmental impact led many countries, including South Korea, to restrict or ban its use in oral care products.

From a regulatory standpoint, the key issue is not the concentration detected, but the presence of a substance that is not approved for use in toothpaste.

Consumer Refund Policy

To address consumer concerns, Aekyung Industry has introduced a full, unconditional refund policy. Consumers may request a refund regardless of:

  • Purchase date or location
  • Whether the product has been opened or used
  • Whether a receipt is available

Refunds can be requested through Aekyung Industry’s official website or a dedicated customer service channel established for the recall.

Company Statement and Public Response

Aekyung Industry emphasized that all other toothpaste products sold by the company are manufactured domestically in South Korea and are not affected by the recall. According to the company, these products comply fully with domestic safety and quality standards.

Public reaction has been mixed. While some consumers acknowledge the company’s prompt response, others have raised broader questions about supply chain oversight and quality assurance for imported consumer goods.

What Consumers Can Learn from This Case

This recall highlights the importance of transparent quality control systems in an increasingly globalized supply chain. Even trusted brands can face challenges when sourcing products internationally, making proactive testing and oversight essential.

For consumers, the incident serves as a reminder to stay informed about product recalls and ingredient regulations, even for everyday household items.

Closing Thoughts

Aekyung Industry’s decision to voluntarily recall its 2080 toothpaste products reflects a cautious approach to consumer safety and regulatory compliance. How effectively the company strengthens its quality control processes moving forward will likely influence how quickly consumer confidence is restored.

For now, the case stands as a practical example of how product safety, regulation, and brand trust intersect in today’s global consumer market.
